MAWI'S COMPANY FACES COPYRIGHT SUIT

A mineral water company has filed a suit against a company owned by singer Mawi for infringement of copyright of its products.

Yassa Sdn Bhd is seeking general damages of RM1mil from Mawi World Sdn Bhd in the suit filed at the High Court yesterday.

Yassa also wants to stop Mawi World from continuing to produce bottled mineral water using Yassa's licence number, factory address and product contents on its label.

In its statement of claim, the plaintiff said one of its directors chanced upon bottled water branded as Mawi World displayed at a supermarket in Subang Jaya, Selangor.

The director found that the information displayed on the bottle labels were the same as that printed on the plaintiff's products.

A police report was lodged on Oct 2 at the Seremban police station for infringement of intellectual property.

Both parties met on Oct 3 when Mawi World allegedly admitted to using the information without Yassa's approval.

The defendant claimed ignorance of the infringement as it got its water supply from a company called Johtaw Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd.

Mawi World purportedly agreed to discuss compensation for the infringement but no agreement was reached between the parties.
