KONRAD ADENAUER FOUNDATION

About us

We are a political foundation which operates two education centres and 16 education institutes nationwide. Around the world, our offices abroad look after more than 200 projects in more than 120 countries. We have two headquarters, one in Sankt Augustin near Bonn and one in Berlin, where we opened the Academy as a conference building in 1998.
To us, the name and the principles of Konrad Adenauer are a precept, a mission, and an obligation. The Foundation has been bearing the name of the first Federal Chancellor since 1964, having evolved from the Society for Christian Democratic Educational Work that was established as early as 1955.
On the national and international plane, we employ political education to promote peace, freedom, and justice. Our key concerns include consolidating democracy, promoting the unification of Europe, intensifying transatlantic relations, and development-policy cooperation.
As a think-tank and consulting agency, we develop scientific background information and current analyses, breaking the ground for political action. The Foundation's Academy in Berlin provides a forum for discourse about issues of future relevance in politics, the economy, the church, society, and science.
At our meetings and congresses, we bring together people who 'have something to say'. Each year, we organise more than 2,500 events attended by 145,000 people in Germany alone.
We provide moral and material support to gifted young people not only from Germany but also from Central and Eastern Europe and from the developing countries. We keep close contacts with our alumni, who by now number more than 8,800.
Exhibitions, readings and awards complement our portfolio. We support young artists, and the renowned literature prize of the KAF is awarded once a year. There are dedicated projects to promote young journalists. Since 1980, we have been awarding a prize for local journalism. The Social Market Economy Prize of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation has been awarded since 2002 to personages of outstanding merit in preserving and developing social market economy.
The Archive for Christian Democratic Politics explores and gives access to the history of Christian Democracy in Germany and Europe. Users may avail themselves of a large volume of documents, modern media, and a library containing around 157,000 publications on politics and contemporary history.

About Us

For more than 40 years the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAF) has been cooperating with partners in the world in order to cope with these challenges:
KAF's international activities aim at implementing the principle of non-violent conflict resolution, supporting democracy and the rule of law, respecting human rights, furthering mutual understanding, respect, appreciation and cooperation between different nations, cultures, ethnics and religions, promoting the unique German concept of social market economy, i.e. a holistic concept of a sustainable market economy encompassing well-balanced economic, social, ecological and ethical development, providing help towards self-help in development, fighting the causes of poverty and encouraging environmental protection.
In fact, the international work of KAF constitutes an active peace policy on a global scale.
The Konrad Adenauer Foundation has been named after the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany and is guided by the principles of Konrad Adenauer (1876-1967) who is one of the foundig fathers of a modern, peaceful and truly democratic Germany and of a united Europe, too.
In addition, KAF's values are derived from both the Catholic Christian Social Teachings and the Protestant Christian Ethics. However, KAF is open to all faiths and belief systems as well as to atheists and non-believers, as long as they subscribe in words and in deeds to the universal values of peace, freedom, justice, human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
Legally speaking, KAF is a non-governmental organization registered in the German Registrar of Societies. It has strong ties to the Christian Democractic Union (CDU) Party for which KAF serves as a think-tank and a training institution. However, all KAF training programmes are open to the general public, too.
The Konrad Adenauer Foundation was founded in 1956 in order to conduct civic education for public servants, public opinion leaders and politically interested citizen in order to promote peace, freedom, justice, human rights, democracy, the rule of law and the unique German concept of social market economy (Soziale Marktwirtschaft).
In Germany, KAF - apart from its headquarters in Berlin - is operating 1 academy, 2 centres and 21 institutes of political education. More than 60 representative offices abroad are running dialogue, education and development programmes together with over 200 foreign partner organizations in more than 120 countries.

Partners

Already since the 1970ies, KAF has been cooperating with four well-known Malaysian partner organisations to support the development of a modern Malaysia.
